The older subdivisions off Highway 90 and Sheldon Road in 77530 have a lot of GE and Whirlpool gas cooktops that have been running since the early 90s — and Houston summers don't go easy on them. Ambient kitchen heat alone can push a marginal igniter module past its limit. Most Channelview calls we get are a burner that sparks but won't catch, or a Samsung glass-top cracked after a cast-iron skillet landed wrong. Humidity off the Ship Channel doesn't help either. That salt-heavy air corrodes burner ports faster than anywhere else in east Houston. A GE Profile unit sitting near an open window toward the refinery corridor will show rust inside the burner cap within two or three years.

Channelview's housing stock in 77530 leans hard toward 1970s and 1980s ranch-style homes, with a band of newer construction pushing out near the Sheldon area. That older build means original gas line fittings and 30-year-old range cutouts — not always sized right for a modern KitchenAid 5-burner drop-in. The neighborhoods closest to the Ship Channel corridor were built fast for refinery workers. Kitchens reflect that: functional, not fancy, but the appliances have seen decades of real daily use. We see a lot of Maytag and Frigidaire slide-ins in those blocks — original to the house, never replaced. Newer builds off Sheldon Road and near Pecan Grove Elementary are a different story. Those homes came with Samsung and LG smooth-tops from the builder, usually 2015–2020 models. Good cooktops, but the ceramic glass is more fragile than people expect. One cast-iron dutch oven set down too hard and the surface spiders from the impact point out to the rim.

Common Cooktop Issues in Channelview

Gas burner sparks constantly but the flame never catches

Nine times out of ten it's a misaligned burner cap or an igniter electrode coated with grease and carbon. On older GE and Whirlpool units, the spark module itself can fail — it sends continuous voltage to all igniters even when you're not trying to light anything. You'll hear the clicking stop only when you unplug the unit. That's the module, not the individual electrodes. Clean the electrodes first; replace the module if the clicking continues with everything clean and seated. Done in under an hour on most models.

Cracked ceramic surface spreading across a glass-top cooktop

Samsung and LG smooth-top models are common in the newer Channelview builds off Sheldon Road, and once a crack starts, it spreads fast. A hairline fracture from thermal stress compromises the heating element beneath — one zone ends up running 50°F hotter than the dial shows. Don't keep using it. Uneven resistance in a damaged radiant element can trip the thermal limiter and leave you with a cooktop that shows power but won't heat at all. The glass panel needs full replacement; patching isn't safe and won't hold. We carry the most common Samsung NX and LG LCE panels on the truck for 77530 calls.

Front burner knob spins freely without changing the flame

The knob shaft on KitchenAid and older Whirlpool gas cooktops develops play in the valve stem over time. When the stem internally strips, the knob turns but the gas valve doesn't move. Classic failure on the two front burners that get used every day. Valve stem assembly replacement runs $90–$140 in parts depending on the model year. It's a straightforward swap — about 45 minutes on the bench. The tricky part is sourcing the right valve for older KitchenAid models, since some 2008–2012 part numbers cross over to Whirlpool's catalog and the fit isn't always obvious from the model number alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast can you get to Channelview for cooktop repair?

We run east Houston routes daily — Channelview in 77530 is a straight shot down Highway 90 from our dispatch point. Usually there within 2 hours of your call. Ring us at (832) 366-1414 to get on today's schedule. Evening slots available most weekdays, which matters if you're on a shift schedule at one of the plants nearby. We don't disappear at 5pm.

Do you work on Samsung and LG glass-top cooktops out here?

Samsung and LG induction and radiant models are probably 40% of what we see in Channelview. Most common jobs: heating element swap, control board failure, and cracked ceramic glass. For Samsung models throwing an E-21 or C-d error, that's usually the temperature sensor on the radiant element — a $60 part, one visit. We stock the most-called-for Samsung and LG panels so the second visit is rare.

What does cooktop repair cost, and can I get same-day service?

Diagnostic fee is $75 — applies toward the repair if you proceed. Most cooktop fixes land between $120 and $280. Call before 11am and we can almost always send someone out same-day to 77530. Igniter and glass jobs are the fastest — parts on the truck, one visit. Gas valve work takes a bit longer if the part isn't stocked, but we'll tell you that upfront before you commit.
